2004 February 6 Ð By a 5-1 consensus vote, the Creighton School Board has stood by its earlier decision to add high school programming to Creighton Community School, putting to rest a controversial issue that left many residents divided. The vote was taken after the trustees received a petition to have the matter reviewed further. February 10 Ð Flin Flon's new business boom continued this morning with the grand opening of the Extra Foods grocery store at the Flintoba Shopping Centre. The 42,000 sq. ft. store has become one of the community's largest commercial employers, creating about 50 new jobs. Extra Foods joins Wal-Mart and Canadian Tire at the site. "As far as I am concerned, it's another nice big business in town," said Mayor Dennis Ballard. "More development, in my opinion, is better because it gives amenities to the people and taxes to the City coffers." February 16 Ð Hundreds of residents over the weekend found reason to celebrate in the midst of what has been a frigid and snowy winter season, during the Bust the Blues Winter Festival. The new festival marked the first time that Flin Flon's Sled Dog Races and Creighton's Chilly Willy Winter Festival merged together as a single entity. The festival also included the Bust the Winter Blues Social on Saturday night, with more than 200 people turning out to enjoy themselves with the music of the popular local band, High Noon. February 19 Ð All 26 students who completed a LPN nursing course in Flin Flon last year have passed their exams and are now ready to put their skills to practise. The course was offered for the first time in this area, at Ruth Betts School through the Assinaboine Community College in Brandon. "The course has had a huge impact, and I think a very positive one," said Marlyn Fehr, one of the instructors. February 23 Ð A very satisfied crowd of 240 people enjoyed Hapnot's annual Dinner Theatre production of Lucky Dollar, Private Eye on Friday and Saturday night. Julian Kolt, who starred as Los Angeles' favourite gumshoe, led a cast of 25 Hapnot students in the search for the Pearl of Persia. "The reason we do these musicals every year is because it it such an amazing opportunity for all the students involved," said Lisa Aune who co-directed the production with Lana Nagy. February 25 Ð An ambitious multimillion dollar plan is underway to amalgamate recreational and community services in Flin Flon and Creighton under one roof. The proposed $11.2 million Communityplex would be built beside the Phantom Lake Golf Course, and would hinge on federal and provincial grant money. The plan calls for the eventual closing of the Aqua Centre, Willowpark Curling Rink, Creighton Sportex and possibly the Flin Flon Community Hall.1/17/2005
