Question: In a day and age when we want our children to stay in school, is our city going to finally make a high school education mandatory for all non-summer-student hires? Why or why not? Mayor Therien: Virtually every position available comes with a minimum requirement of a high school education. However, there are times and positions where we may not get any applicants with this educational requirement. When this happens (and it is rare), we may and have made concessions. The successful applicant without Grade 12 is told that in order to advance within our workforce, the person must at least gain his/her GED. There are other positions within our workforce that require the employee to obtain certain technical competencies before they can bid on specific jobs as well. * * * Question: Does the city want the new UCN building to include a dorm to attract out of town students? Have you lobbied for that? Mayor Therien: With the expected numbers of students taking the courses offered, the likelihood of having enough students to adequately fill a dorm may not be there at this time. However, there is a possibility of an expansion of courses being offered in Flin Flon some time in the future. At that time a dorm may become more practical. Having said that, I am very excited about this development and UCN in general. I think this is a major addition to Flin Flon, complete with the possibility of even bigger, better things to come. We may not like the fact that UCN chose The Pas and Thompson as major sites for full campuses, but at least we are moving in the right direction in terms of having a UCN presence in Flin Flon. * * * Send your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor," C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, MB, R8A 0T2.
