How much do you know about Deer Lake, Newfoundland? Here are 10 things. Founded by George Nichols in the 1880s, Deer Lake began as a logging community. Native Darren Langdon (left winger for the Montreal Canadiens) has played more NHL games than any other Newfoundlander. Their Immaculate Conception Church, completed in 1953, was the first pre-fab building constructed in Nfld. Their Insectarium, located in a former barn, built in the 1940s is one of only two in Canada. Moose Howley, a 10 ton concrete and metal replica of a bull moose was named by school children. Nearly four million cubic metres of earth was excavated and removed to create the 11-kilometre canal for the Generating Station. The community's first school was a one-room, tar-paper shack built in 1923. Years later, Deer Lake became the first town to have an integrated school system, as well as the first electrically-heated school in the province. Deer Lake records the most numbers of sunshine-filled days in Newfoundland and Labrador annually. The Driftwood Inn was the first family-run business in Deer Lake.
