Creighton Curling History - Part I This article on the Creighton Curling Club is possible thanks to information from Terry Jaszan, Mary Vandergucht, Grace Salamondra and Helen Schaff, as well as Fern Kozak and Edna Neufeld. These ladies were among many others who curled at the old Creighton Curling Club when it was established in 1954 and was a three-sheet rink with natural ice. There was a concession that was run by various groups such as the baseball club and the Andres family. There was also a self-contained caf run by Del Hogaboam for a short while. The icemen were Mr. Wanamaker and Mr. Larson with curlers such as Mike Salamondra, John Blake, Frank Farmer and Wally Wolpert, among others who would haul water from Ross Lake to make the ice. When curling first began, everyone's name was thrown into a hat and the teams were drawn. Since curling experience/knowledge was little, positions were changed as the team members' skills became apparent. For the men, the first executive of the Creighton Curling Club in 1954-55 consisted of: M. Bonnett, president; R. Mullaney, vice-president; Captain Carey, chaplain. The executive consisted of: M. Trudeau; M. Skoronski; F. Robinson; T. Scott; W. Duncan; with S. Curtis as secretary-treasurer and R. Mullaney as draw master. There were eleven teams the first year: F. Robinson with J. Chudy, G. Matheson and G. Neufeld; J. Blake with P. Shotton, M. Skoronski and E. Gillis; M. Bonnett with G. Bonnett, W. Duncan and T. McDonald; M. Trudeau with H. Rawles, J. Church and H. Thurston; A. Skoronski with F. Farmer, J. Kitch and H. Halldorson; M. Salamondra with S. Curtis, D. McCurdy and O. Rice; A. Watson with B. Law, G. Bartley and B. Erickson; F. Allbutt with R. Mullaney, G. Fenner and M. Vandergucht; H. Reimer with J. Milne, B. Locker and N. Karchie; T. Scott with J. Danis, K. Nutbrown and B. Stragier; and L. Bryson with T. Bouteiller, D. McGleish and D. Hanes with associate A. Pelletier. By 1955-56, there were 16 men's teams. That rose to 20 in '56-57 and to 21 in '57-58. In '58-59 there were 15 teams. To be continued...
