The Flin Flon School Division avoided conciliation Tuesday when the school board ratified a new one-year contract with the teachers' union. The board had applied for a provincial conciliator last month after it became apparent that the trustees had an interpretation of a clause in the contract that was different from that of the union. "If the association doesn't agree with the interpretation of the clause, there are procedures within the contract to deal with that," said Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch. Here are the highlights of the contract, which is retroactive to July 1, 2002, and runs until June 30, 2003. A two per cent salary increase from July 1, 2002, to December 31, 2002, and an additional one per cent increase from January 1, 2003, to June 30, 2003. An increase in paternity leave from two days to three days. One day of personal leave at no salary deduction. Deletion of the allowance for teachers of special education classes. Veitch expects the contract to be signed by the end of the month. The negotiating committees for both the board and the union had agreed to the contract. The union ratified the proposal, but it wasn't until Tuesday's regular meeting that the board did so as well.
