Gerry Hart has a street named after him. Why not Bobby Clarke? Bobby Clarke: First, let me say it was a privilege and an honour over the last couple of years to recognize and pay tribute to a couple of groups and individuals by naming streets after them. Firstly, it was a great group of gentlemen who won the 1957 Memorial Cup and, as such, have 57 Memorial Cup Drive leading into the Whitney Forum. The next is Gerry Hart and Hart Avenue. Again, another great gentleman who, yes, made his mark in hockey on a personal level but still contributes whatever he can to The Bomber organization and, as I said before, does so very quietly. Now, as for Bobby. Yes, it is time to do something for him as well, but why limit your focus to just a street. Maybe there is something else. Any suggestions? **** What are you personally not happy with in Flin Flon and what would you and/or City Council be prepared to do about it? There are a few things that I am not happy with in Flin Flon. Probably the one that gets me the most is the Flin Flon Hotel. For 11 years it has remained vacant but as long as the current owner continues to pay taxes to keep it out of tax sale, nothing can be done about it, at least from city council. The state of our infrastructure and the inability to provide funding to repair/replace it all, will always be something I am not happy about. It may be some consolation that EVERY community in Canada is in the same boat, but it is only a minor consolation. The answer is to continue to do what we can, whether it be on our own or by partnering with the provincial and/or the federal government. Unless something miraculously happens, this will be an issue for many generations to come, I am afraid. There are other issues which I am not happy about, but what about those that I am happy about. For the longest time, council was looking for a UCN presence in Flin Flon and, in a few short months, this will become a reality with the Mining Academy. This may not be the full campus we wanted, but this makes me happy, non the less. With all that has happened over the last number of years, the state of our business community is actually quite strong, with a variety of items/services to be offered. Could it be better? YES it could, but then it always could be better. We increased seniors housing by adding one new multisuite unit not that long ago. We realize the need for more and will continue to pursue avenues to bring this about. With the help of our provincial government, we were able to upgrade a number of parks in town. I would hazard to say we have some of the best parks comparable to anywhere. I could go on, but we do not have enough space. * * * Send your questions for Mayor Therien to The Reminder by phone at 687-3454, fax at 687-4473, e-mail at [email protected] or standard delivery at "Ask the Mayor," C/O The Reminder, 14 North Avenue, Flin Flon, MB, R8A 0T2.
