2004 August 4 Ð The Rotary Radio Bingo celebrates 30 years on the air this year, and has become a Saturday morning institution for many people. Since first hitting the airways, the bingo has dished out some $2 million in prizes and, at the same time, the bingo has provided revenues for a host of Flin Flon area projects. August 5 Ð A skilled team of Mounties and their beautiful black horses enthralled hundreds of residents Tuesday evening when the world-famous RCMP Musical Ride trotted into town. Organizers estimate at least 3,500 people made their way to the Foster Park Oval for the show. "They left you wanting more. It was outstanding," said Flin Flon director of recreation Brenda Russell. "I think people left with a great feeling of Canadian pride knowing that these riders represent our country around the world." August 5 Ð Although there was some discussion over the anniversary of the tournament, there was no disputing the fact that the 28th (or 31st) Roller Goodwin Memorial Classic hockey tournament was a total success over the weekend at the Whitney Forum. A special treat were the Memorial Cup reunion games. "The weekend was one of those great Flin Flon events, not dissimilar to Homecoming 2000," said Brent Lethbridge. August 6 Ð After a lengthy discussion held at Willowpark on Wednesday, with at times heated arguments heard on both sides, a decision has been made to re-vote on the future of the Willow Park Curling Club. August 10 Ð More than three decades after he helped pioneer the building of the Flin Flon Municipal Airport, the terminal building has been named in honour of the late Joe van Nes. Flin Flon Mayor Dennis Ballard and Bob Tanner, a longtime friend of Joe's, yesterday unveiled a plaque at the terminal declaring it the Joe van Nes Airport Terminal Building. Tanner said he doesn't believe the airport would have opened in 1963 without the initiative and foresight of van Nes, who passed away in 1999. August 13 Ð One of Main Street's popular gathering spots, the Flin Flon Bakery and Coffee Shop, has closed its doors. Owner John Wolters, whose family established the business in 1985, said he wants to leave behind the long bakery hours to become a diamond driller. Ð Ted Highfield was this year's lucky winner of the Bomber boat raffle, taking home the 16 ft. Rebel Lund boat and package worth $14,995. August 16 Ð After a re-vote was held, the majority of Willowpark Curling Club members have voted to remain in their own rink rather than amalgamate with he Uptown Curling Club for the upcoming season. August 31 Ð A deal has been struck for the Co-op to purchase Advance Automotive in Creighton and install cardlock gas pumps there next year. The arrangement will see Advance's Tim Hanna move his automotive repair shop to the Co-op Gas Bar on Main Street.1/17/2005
