August 2 Flin Flon RCMP don't know who would want to rip a children's play structure from the ground and roll it down a hill, but they hope to find out. That's just what happened to a toddler jungle gym near the Joe Brain Children's Petting Zoo. "This doesn't affect anyone but the small children in the community," said Cst. Bryan Bowskill. August 3 The Neighbours of the North Park at the south end of Main St. is turning heads as it nears competition. The $25,000 project, funded by the chamber of commerce, includes large metal sculptures representing the official flower of each province and territory. August 5 Manitoba Conservation officers have had their hands full this summer as bear reports have risen to possibly their highest level in memory. By Wednesday afternoon, some 85 calls relating to the furry mammals had come out of Flin Flon and the surrounding cottage areas. August 10 When bridge partners Jim Flynn and Kerry Flom tour the card-playing circuit, most people don't think twice about their names. But when the American pair came to town to enter the Flin Flon Sectional Bridge Tournament over the weekend, people couldn't help but be amused. Flin Flon welcomed Flynn and Flom. The good-natured card buffs wanted to reach the venerable Life Masters status in bridge in an unforgettable way. August 12 Vandals have again struck Flinty's Boardwalk, this time knocking out a handful of stairs and smashing a concrete bench to pieces. August 15 Long-standing concerns about lead-footed drivers on Green St. have intensified after a recent collision left two parked vehicles totaled. "Speeding on Green St. is out of control," said George G. Smith, who along with his wife owned the pair of written-off automobiles. It's out with the old and in with the new as the Flin Flon Bombers prepare to re-launch their website on August 22. The makeover gives the site a cleaner, more appealing look. August 17 Queen Mermaid Brittany Slugoski received a royal welcome after returning home from her success at last week's Miss Manitoba pageant. The friendly teen ably represented the Flin Flon area, earning the title of Second Princess at the provincial competition in Winkler. Long-time volunteers Alexander and Eva Krassilowsky have been added to the Wall of Honour at the Flin Flon Station Museum. August 19 A pair of South Hudson St. residents are sounding alarm bells after one or more wolves recently mauled their dogs. Channing is due for "a much deserved turn at the budget buck" in the form of aesthetic and safety enhancements, Flin Flon City Council heard Tuesday. A concerned resident in the subdivision wrote to request road and park upgrades as well as measures to prevent garbage from spilling out of vehicles en route to the nearby landfill. Officials had extra reason to smile when Denare Beach's Northern Gateway Museum hosted a successful open house Sunday afternoon. This marks the first summer in which the $140,000 facility belongs to the northern village with no debt attached. August 22 Emergency responders and the handicapped have easier access to the Flin Flon General Hospital thanks to a new entrance corridor. The provincially-funded project includes an elevator and staircase leading from the parking lot to the main doors. Gas is just a card swipe away in Creighton. The Co-op's new cardlock gas pumps along Creighton Ave. came on line last week and have already generated a positive response. August 24 Environmentally-conscious Denare Beach residents are calling on village council to rescue its recycling drop-off program from the trash. Council discontinued the program earlier this summer amid repeated abuses by people throwing household garbage into the recycling bins. August 26 Flin Flon's elected officials are scrambling to find new developers after a service organization decided it won't pursue a seniors' housing project any further. The Rotary Club wanted to construct a new 20-unit facility at Rotary Court but was unable to reach a funding agreement with the Canada-Manitoba Affordable Housing Initiative. Now Mayor Dennis Ballard and MLA Gerard Jennissen are trying to scout out interest from the private sector. Kin Park is receiving $47,000 in improvements, with projects to include a parking lot, play structure, gazebo and outdoor basketball court. August 29 The NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority will invest nearly $100,000 to add new equipment to Flin Flon's health care system this fiscal year. Among the items are a birthing bed and a pair of bedside monitors and patient lifts. Cpl. Doug Ashton of the Cranberry Portage RCMP is moving on, having accepted a sergeant's position in Powerview, north of Winnipeg. August 31 The health authority will receive much-needed provincial funding to expand the Flin Flon General Hospital's dialysis unit, Premier Gary Doer announced Monday. The $658,000 project, set to begin next month and completed by the spring, will add two stations to a revamped dialysis ward.
