Alcohol Poisoning Anyone who drinks too much alcohol too fast can die from alcohol poisoning. Sometimes when a person drinks too much alcohol, he or she will pass out. This is the body's way of protecting itself by not allowing the person to drink any more. What Happens If I Drink Alcohol Too Quickly? If a large amount of alcohol is consumed in a short period of time it raises your blood alcohol concentration. Alcohol sedates the brain and spinal cord so much that the brain shuts down. Automatic processes such as breathing, which is controlled by the brain, slows then stops. The drinker becomes unconscious, slips into a coma and may die? The drinker may also die from choking on vomit. What Are the Symptoms of Alcohol Poisoning? Cold, clammy pale or bluish skin. Not responding to efforts to be awoken. Not waking up after vomiting. Slow shallow breathing (eight breaths per minute or less). Not responding to being pinched, poked or shaken. Rapid heart beat. Unable to stand. What To Do If I Fear Someone Has Alcohol Poisoning? Get medical help as soon as possible. Do not leave them alone. Continue to monitor their breathing. Place the person on their side in the recovery position. Don't take chances. Get help if you suspect alcohol poisoning, even if the person is underage.
