During VeteransÕ Week many commemorative events and activities take place across the country. Take the time to honour and remember our veterans with your family this year. Remembrance Day now celebrates many different generations of soldiers. From the Second World War to the Korean War, as well as the Canadian participation in the Afghanistan mission, the laying of wreaths, the Act of Remembrance and the playing of the Last Post allow Canadians to warmly salute both our veterans and todayÕs armed forces. The ceremonies taking place on Remembrance Day are often broadcast live across Canada. But the events and activities organized around this day can take many different forms on both a national and local level. Canadian citizens should gather together and make a personal commitment to honour the memory of those who served our country in the name of peace and liberty around the world. The best way of doing this is for families to celebrate this event together. You could start by instilling in children the importance of buying a poppy made by veteransÕ workshops rather than commercially made ones. The idea of corresponding with a soldier could well appeal to adolescents. In fact, why not start everyone in the family writing to a deployed Canadian Forces member. Just go to the National Defence Web site (www.forces.gc.ca), click on the ÒSupport our TroopsÓ link and then ÒWrite to the TroopsÓ. You could also participate in projects such as ÒValentines for VetsÓ (www.vac-acc.gc.ca).
