The phrase “take a break” doesn’t seem to exist for Hapnot’s volleyball teams. All four of the school’s volleyball clubs have been in action for the past two weekends.

Both senior varsity boys’ and girls’ teams headed south to Brandon to take part in one of Manitoba’s largest tournaments, the Big Dig, hosted by Neelin High School.

The Kweens finished in last place in their pool and lost to Neelin’s JV side, but rebounded with two big wins in the consolation bracket, beating Crocus Plains and Swan Valley. However, the Kweens couldn’t handle Gilbert Plains in the B-side consolation title game, losing 22-25, 15-25.

Things didn’t go as well for the Kings, who got into the B-side bracket and lost twice, going down 17-25, 18-25 to Virden and 16-25, 21-15 to the Notre Dame Coyotes.

The JV girls put together the best result of any team in the past week, earning a third-place spot in a tournament in Roblin. Both JV girls and boys teams played in the tournament.

The junior Kweens side beat hosts Goose Lake High, Major Pratt and RD Parker in the tournament round-robin before snagging a 25-9, 25-20 victory over RD Parker to clinch third.

Hapnot’s junior boys’ team finished tied for third in their pool before losing their first playoff game to RD Parker 16-25, 22-25. In a consolation game, the Kings won 25-23, 25-14 against the MacGregor Mustangs, earning a ninth-place finish.

Creighton

The Kodiaks girls’ volleyball team ended their season with a conference tournament last week in Meath Park. Two spots at an upcoming regional tournament were on the line, going to the top two finishers.

Unfortunately, Creighton was unable to earn either of the two spots. The team went winless, dropping games against Hudson Bay and Kinistino.

The Kodiaks will be doing hosting duty this weekend, holding a boys’ conference tournament on Nov. 10-11.

Creighton will welcome teams from Birch Hills, Meath Park and Montreal Lake to this weekend’s tournament.

The Kodiaks boys’ team is fresh from a tournament last weekend in Humboldt, where they finished fifth overall.

Hockey

The Greenstone Hockey League kicked off last weekend, with Flin Flon earning a win in their first game.

Flin Flon beat Deschambault Lake 10-7 on October 29 to start the year. Pelican Narrows also
earned a 10-4 win against Frontier Collegiate.

The season continued Nov. 5 at the Creighton Sportex, with the Flin Flon team beating Pelican Narrows 5-3 and Deschambault Lake knocking off Frontier 10-3.

There will be new league champions this season, as reigning title holders Creighton will not have a team in the league this year. Instead, Creighton will combine rosters with Flin Flon, forming one team to represent both areas.

Five teams will be playing in the Greenstone League this year, with one team – Sandy Bay – yet to play so far.
