Teacher-turned-bodybuilder chalks up another triumph

Keeping up with a class full of 10-year-olds would be a major workout for most adults, but for Flin Flon teacher Samantha Moore, it’s a walk in the park compared to prepping for a bodybuilding competition.

Keeping up with a class full of 10-year-olds would be a major workout for most adults, but for Flin Flon teacher Samantha Moore, it’s a walk in the park compared to prepping for a bodybuilding competition.

Last month, Moore enjoyed the fruits of her labour when she came home from Winnipeg with two trophies in hand, finishing first in the women’s physique category at the Manitoba Amateur Bodybuilding Association (MABBA) Provincial Qualifier on March 19, and winning the award for best women’s poser in the same category.

This was Moore’s second bodybuilding show; she competed for the first time last summer.

After taking a few months off to recover from her training for that first competition, Moore started ramping up her workouts last fall to prepare for the MABBA event.

“I did about five months of prep, starting in November with the diet, and working out six to seven days a week, about one and a half to two hours a day,” said Moore.

Moore’s placement at the March 19 competition qualifies her to compete in the MABBA provincial show in May and the National Natural Competition, though she has decided not to take advantage of either opportunity at this point.

“I love doing the competitions, but prep, diet and fitting in all the workout time is tough,” said Moore, who, in addition to her full-time teaching role at École McIsaac School, is completing a masters degree in special education from Brandon University.

“I still work out five days a week in the off-season, but the schedule isn’t as demanding, and you can skip a day here and there. But when you’re in prep, every day counts.”
