A northern Manitoba mine rescue team has earned the top spot in the province.

Four mine rescue teams took part in the Manitoba Provincial Mine Rescue Competition in Lac du Bonnet on May 25 and 26.

The Hudbay Snow Lake team ended the competition as the victors, topping teams from Tanco and Vale mines as well as Hudbay’s team from Flin Flon.

As part of the competition, teams took part in a simulated underground mine rescue and first aid mission, filled out written exams, and took part in stretcher relay, tire lift, Toyota pull, bike build and firefighting competitions.

Due to their high finish, the Snow Lake team will be eligible to compete at the upcoming National Western Region Mine Rescue Competition, which will be in September 2019 in Fernie, BC.

The next provincial mine rescue competition will be a home event for Hudbay Flin Flon. The community will host the event next May.
