The Flin Flon Bombers got into penalty trouble late in the first period of Tuesday night's game against the La Ronge Ice Wolves and never recovered, losing by a score of 6-3. Special teams were definitely a factor, as La Ronge scored five power-play goals on 10 chances, while the Bombers could only muster one power-play goal on their 10 opportunities. Doug Exner opened the scoring with a power-play goal at 4:57 with just two seconds left in a Bomber penalty. Tyler Beachell evened the score for the Bombers, scoring at 8:12 while Bryn Brooks was off for Illegal Equipment. Fritz Sauter and David Holinaty picked up the assists. Dustin Dubas scored during a five-on-three advantage at 17:09, and during the remaining power-play time, Dillon Henningson made it 3-1 for La Ronge. Kris McCarthy scored the Ice Wolves' only even-strength goal of the game at 17:51, giving La Ronge a three-goal lead by the end of the third period. It was their third goal in a 42 second span. Penalties continued to dictate the flow of the game in the second period, but only one goal was scored. T.J. Schneider scored his third goal of the season for La Ronge on a power play at 19:15 to give the Wolves a 5-1 lead going into the third period. The Bombers switched netminders during the intermission. Francois Laverdiere allowed five goals on 37 shots over 40 minutes of play, although four of those goals did come while the Bombers were busy killing penalties. In the third period, the Bombers made a game of it, setting up an exciting finish despite the lopsided score. Clayton Geige's second goal of the season came at the 1:03 mark of the third period, with Holinaty and Kyle Holmes assisting. Tyler Beachell picked up his second tally of the game just 22 seconds later, and the Bombers were trailing 5-3 with time to spare. Joey Moggach and Clete Mastad assisted on the Bombers' third goal. Flin Flon had some excellent scoring chances on the power play in the middle part of the period, but goaltender Mike Carozza stopped everything the Bombers threw at him from that point on. Bomber netminder Michael Pilote allowed only one goal in the third period on 10 shots, coming on the power play at 18:47. Donovan Hall scored his fourth goal of the year to make the final score 6-3 in favour of the Ice Wolves. Final shots on net were recorded as 52-48 with the edge going to the Bombers, although this total seems a little exaggerated. Only 481 fans came out to watch the Tuesday night game in La Ronge, despite the fact that the Wolves are off to their best start in franchise history. The win improved the Wolves to 5-2-2-1, good for 13 points and a tie for first place with the Kindersley Klippers at the top of the ITECH Conference. Flin Flon has dropped to 1-5-1-1 in their first eight games, but they remain two points ahead of the Melfort Mustangs, who sit in the basement with one win and two points in eight games. Flin Flon will have a tough task ahead of them this weekend, as they will be in Humboldt on Friday, before heading to Kindersley for a pair of games against the Klippers. Next home action for the Bombers will be on October 15 and 16 when Flin Flon will host the Melfort Mustangs. In other Bomber news, the team has moved veteran defenceman Eric Knutson to the Waywayseecappo Wolverines of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for future considerations.
