One of Canada’s best young wrestlers, Flin Flon’s own Carson Lee, has another high finish at a prestigious event.

Lee was selected to represent Canada at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, wrestling at Asia Pavilian on Oct. 14

The only Canadian male competitor in the field, Lee, entered the 80 kilogram boys’ freestyle event, a six wrestler division including internationally distinguished competitors.

Lee was placed in a three person group to begin the tournament, facing Algerian Fateh Benferdjallah, a two-time African cadet wrestling champion, and Valentine Yairegpie of the Federated States of Micronesia. While Lee narrowly lost his match with Benferdjallah 8-7, he came back to top Yairegpie 11-0.

After finishing second in his group, Lee earned a spot in the bronze medal match, missing out on a gold medal matchup by only one point.

In the bronze medal match, Lee faced Uzbekistan’s Mukhammadrasul Rakhimov, who won back-to-back silver medals in his category at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Cadet Asia Championship. Rakhimov pipped Lee to the podium, winning 10-0.

Lee, a two-time UWW Cadet Pan-American silver medallist and the winner of a bronze medal at this year’s UWW Cadet World Championship, will head home and finish his next year of high school at Hapnot Collegiate.
