It was what the team had been training for all year. This past weekend teams from The Pas and Thompson came to challenge the Aqua Jets for a spot on Team Manitoba. Forty-seven swimmers in all moved through the water seemingly effortlessly with visions of gold under their swim caps. Teams cheered on their own athletes and watched as they made it from one end of the pool to the other. As the Aqua Jets were hosting, they hoped to impress all who were watching. And swim coach Mark Fenske says there was no doubt that that happened. ÒI was extremely impressed with the way the meet went,Ó says Fenske. This was the first meet Flin Flon has hosted in last eight years. ÒThe club fell away from being competitive for a while. Going to competitions wasnÕt a priority and hosting a meet was even less of a priority,Ó says the coach. But things are turning around for the Aqua Jets this season as they have hosted a big meet and hope to continue on that same path. A plus for Fenske, as he watched the meet, was the hospitality everyone showed in the pool. With all the extras that were put on he says it was just amazing. ÒThere were lots of prizes,Ó he says. ÒIf they beat an old time they were given a ticket for a draw for a prize at the end.Ó Swimmers walked away with everything from Ipods to a bike, fishing equipment, Webkins, swim passes and golf clubs. For the Aqua Jets themselves, Fenske says about 75 per cent swam personal bests. ÒItÕs even better than I was expecting,Ó he says, adding that the swimmers were at a meet just a month ago. Another big plus for the team is seeing four of their own head to Junior Provincials and Manitoba B this June in Winnipeg. Jenna Bratvold, Emma Peterson, Garrison Aune and Kyla Suss will be heading down to the city in the next few weeks in hopes of bringing home a few more golds.
