Seamus Maguire is definitely a man in uniform.

The former Flin Flon Bomber is playing hockey this season for the Royal Military College of Canada. At the Kingston, Ont., school, he is training for army logistics and a full-time military career.

“I’m definitely enjoying the hockey most of all here,” Maguire said. “It’s great being part of such a close team and it’s definitely a different experience being at RMC, and having the rest of the team to support you makes it that much better.”

The RMC Paladins compete at the USports level in the Ontario University Athletics. USports is the highest level of university hockey in Canada.

Maguire finds himself competing against players who played at the major junior level or even in the pro ranks. He has two goals and three points in 17 games.

“I was mostly drawn to RMC for the opportunity to play [USports] hockey for a team that’s building to be a competitor,” Maguire said. “RMC is also a great opportunity, though being on a full scholarship along with getting paid and coming out of school with a job in the Forces it made it hard to pass up.”

Maguire’s journey to RMC started in his hometown of Victoria, BC. He played a season of Junior B hockey with the Saanich Braves as a 17-year-old. He then spent the 2013-14 season with the Bombers, accumulating seven points in 41 games. During that season he played a couple games at the Junior B level with the Tri-Town Thunder. The next season he had two points in 12 games with the Bombers but also played with the Braves and suited up for a game in Junior A with his hometown Victoria Grizzlies.

“The best part of playing for the Bombers would definitely have to be the atmosphere and culture around hockey in Flin Flon,” Maguire said. “I loved playing in front of the fans at the Whitney and just the way the team is regarded in the community as well.”

He wrapped up his junior career last season with the Cochrane Crunch of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League. He had a career-high 27 goals and 71 points in 50 games. Maguire was an assistant captain.
