Bomber goalie Newton earns Division III scholarship

Former Flin Flon Bomber goalie Brenden Newton will head south for school next season.

The goalie affectionately known as “Newts” will join the roster of the Northland College Lumberjacks, a NCAA Division III program, next season.

Newton played three seasons with the Bombers and took over the starting role last season, but missed two months of the season due to concussion-related concerns.

During the 2017-18 season, Newton played 37 games, ending the year with a 2.98 goals against average and a .910 save percentage. His playoff numbers were slightly better, with a .918 save percentage and a 2.90 goals against average in eight games.

The Medicine Hat, Alta., product is 5’10’’ and 174 pounds and played midget hockey with the Notre Dame Hounds.

Next season, the Lumberjacks will play in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Lumberjacks went 9-13-3 last season.

For 2019-20, the Lumberjacks will switch conferences, joining the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
