5-4 win for Bombers, beating out Battlefords

Chalk up two more points for the maroon and white. The Flin Flon Bombers earned a tight win against the Battlefords North Stars Saturday night. 

The Bombers snagged a 2-0 lead after twenty minutes, getting goals from Dawson McKenzie and Isaac Jackson. In the second, Vincent Nardone – fresh off of signing an NCAA scholarship with Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha – added his 12th goal of the year to give Flin Flon a 3-0 lead.

Then, the Stars started to claw back. Brett Gammer got the Battlefords on the board early in the second. After Calvon Boots restored a three goal lead for the Bombers, two quick goals by Noah Form and Matthias Urbanski got Battlefords within a goal.

Despite the surge, the Bombers ultimately still had the upper hand early in the third. Chrystopher Collin scored in the first minute of the third period, giving Flin Flon a 5-3 lead. Halfway through the period, Quintin Loon-Stewardson scored to bring the Stars within one.

Both teams battled hard as the period ended, but in the end, the Bombers came out on top. Pierce Diamond earned the win for Flin Flon after a 43 save performance, while opponent Joel Grzybowski took the L, making 25 saves.

The Bombers have leapfrogged Nipawin for second spot in the Sherwood Division, ending the night with 32 points compared to Nipawin's 31. Melfort sits in first place with 33 points after a lopsided 8-1 win over La Ronge.

It's back to Flin Flon again for the Bombers, who will play their next four games at home. The Bombers will play host to Nipawin on Nov. 20, Notre Dame on Nov. 23, Weyburn on Nov. 28 and Estevan on Nov. 30.
