December’s nights are longer than those during the rest of the year; however, this month’s full moon is unique.

As a matter of fact, 2018’s December full moon will be the longest full moon in nearly a decade. In fact, the luminescent celestial orb will offer a total viewing time of 15 hours and 32 minutes. The last time that it offered that much viewing time was in 2010 ( for a total viewing time of 15 hours and 54 minutes), according to the Weather Network.

Now, Metro Vancouver will be privy to a full moon known as the “Cold Moon.”

“This is the month when the winter cold fastens its grip and the nights become long and dark. This full Moon is also called the Long Nights Moon by some Native American tribes,”reports Farmer’s Almanac.

Stargazers should opt to travel as far away from city lights as possible in order to avoid light pollution that will obscure the clarity of heavenly bodies. While this works best the in more remote places, anywhere that has a higher elevation will also provide more ideal viewing conditions.
