REGINA — Neither Regina police nor Saskatchewan's police watchdog agency are offering many details about an officer-involved shooting in a residential neighbourhood that a neighbour says ended with a body on the road.

The Regina Police Service issued a news release on Sunday saying they were investigating what they called "a serious incident" involving their SWAT team earlier that afternoon in the 1100 block of Garry Street.

They say the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team, which investigates serious incidents involving police, had been called to investigate the incident but no further details were provided and a spokesman said in an email that SIRT would be fielding all media inquiries.

Doug Turnbull, who lives on the block, says he heard shots which he initially mistook for a vehicle backfiring, and later saw a SWAT vehicle on a lawn and a body on the street covered with a blanket.

Turnbull says the quiet neighbourhood normally doesn't see police activity, but he says the home he believes was involved in the incident typically doesn't have its lawn mowed.

SIRT posted on social media that it is investigating an officer-involved shooting on Garry Street and has asked for witnesses or anyone with video to come forward, but a spokesman responded to an email inquiry saying the agency likely wouldn't have more information to share until Tuesday.
