Manitoba's plans for a summer party birthday party have been postponed due to COVID-19.
The province announced April 8 that most major celebrations for Manitoba 150 have been paused. The provincial government had planned to mark the Manitoba's 150th anniversary of joining Confederation with events throughout the year.
“This is not the time for celebration,” Premier Brian Pallister said.
Monique LaCoste, Manitoba 150 committee chair, said that while events were postponed, funding for projects would still move forward. Manitoba 150 will fund a special grant category for the Northern Neighbours Foundation’s 2020 project funding.
“We invited Manitobans to be united in celebration in 2020 and instead here we are united in the fight against COVID-19 and that means staying home, so our celebrations are on hold,” LaCoste said.
“The pandemic will end and when it does, we're going to be ready with a celebration like no other. We promise it'll be worth the wait. ”
Both Pallister and LaCoste reinforced the postponed celebrations would be even bigger when they finally took place.
“We’re gonna party like it’s 2020 in 2021,” Pallister said.
“It’s gonna be epic,” LaCoste added.
