Autumn equinox marks an annual event to raise awareness of sexual exploitation.

The Flin Flon and Area Against Sexual Exploitation (FAASE) will host its annual Grandmother’s Walk this week.

The walk is held each year on Sept. 21 in support of the Kookum Naa Na Da Maa Waad Abinoojiak Council, which translates to “Grandmothers Protecting Our Children.” The group was formed in 2007 and promotes the message that children are sacred. Aboriginal women, grandmothers and leaders come together each year to show support and stand as protectors for children.

The FAASE said in a letter to Flin Flon city council that it is assumed that sexual exploitation is not happening in remote areas of the province, however youth from all over the province become victims of exploitation.

“Many youth, all over the province, become victims of exploitation when they are asked to or forced to exchange sex for necessities or other items like transportation, food, clothing, shelter, cigarettes or alcohol,” reads the letter.

“The sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of children, youth and adults is a serious concern in Manitoba, Canada and around the globe.”

The FAASE invites men, women, children, grandmothers, leaders, organizations, youth groups and community members to join in solidarity to bring awareness to sexual exploitation and spread the message that violation against children must end.

The Grandmother’s Walk will take place on Friday, Sept. 21 at 12 pm, beginning at Neighbours of the North Park and ending at Pioneer Square where there will be entertainment and refreshments. A pipe ceremony will be held at the park previous to the walk beginning at 11:30 am.
