A man has been arrested after stealing a vehicle with a child inside in Creighton.

Creighton RCMP received a report shortly after 4 pm on July 31 that a vehicle was stolen outside Coutts’ Convenience on Main Street in Creighton. A three-year old girl was in the back seat of the truck.

When officers learned the vehicle was headed toward Flin Flon, members from both Flin Flon and Creighton RCMP detachments hit the highway to pursue the vehicle.

Officers pursued the vehicle to Cranberry Portage, where the stolen vehicle hit a spike belt laid out by RCMP and hit another vehicle. When the stolen vehicle was left undrivable, the suspect left the scene and ran into the bush. The three-year-old was found safe inside and was reunited with her mother.

RCMP from four communities – Cranberry Portage, Creighton, Flin Flon and The Pas – searched for the suspect and set up a perimeter. A police dog with The Pas RCMP eventually found the suspect hiding under a parked vehicle in an outbuilding.

He was arrested and taken to hospital to treat injuries from the collision and a bite wound from the police dog. He is now in RCMP custody in Saskatchewan and made his first appearance via CCTV at Creighton Provincial Court on Aug. 2.

In a press release, RCMP stated the suspect was not cooperative with police. He has been identified as a 42-year-old man, originally from Medicine Hat, Alta.

The suspect faces six charges, including vehicle theft, kidnapping without a firearm, abduction of a person under 16, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting peace officers and operation of a motor vehicle while being pursued by police.

A court date has not been set for the suspect.
