Six of the seven unions at Hudbay voted to ratify a new three-year agreement with the company on Dec. 11.

The agreement will provide wage increases of 2.5 per cent each year as well as a one-time $1,000 signing bonus, according to the Canadian Labour Reporter. It will also provide an increase of 1.2 per cent to pension contributions.

“This is a great achievement that clears the way for everyone in the Manitoba business unit to focus fully on determining our future in a challenging time,” said Andy Lauzon, vice president of the Manitoba business unit for Hudbay. “The union leadership represented the interests of their members with rigour while approaching negotiations in the spirit of finding common ground. The outcome speaks for itself … it is a rare outcome and speaks to the goodwill of everyone.”

Rene Beauchamp, president of IAM 1848 was pleased with the voter turnout for the agreement.

“We ratified the contract by 68 per cent,” he said. “We had a good turnout, a 78 per cent turnout.”

Scott Brubacher, director of corporate communications for Hudbay said the company’s operating engineers will begin negotiating in the new year, after scheduling issues prevented the process from starting earlier.
