Old favourites are set to make a comeback for the 40th anniversary of the Denare Beach Winter Festival.

Denare Beach rec director Mel Durette said there will be only minor changes for this year’s festival, set to take place from Feb. 22 to 24 in Denare Beach. No poker derby will be held this year and a junior edition of the King and Queen Trapper contest will be held on Saturday.

In addition to those changes, an ice sculpting competition will also be a part of the festival, with participants asked to get their sculptures ready by Feb. 20. The winner will be announced during the Musher’s Supper on Feb. 22. A social will be held to commemorate the 40th anniversary and a fireworks display is scheduled for Feb. 22.

Aside from those, most of the traditional favourites with the festival are set to return, including the Turkey Curling World Championships at the bunk behind the DenarePlex, the snow drags on Amisk Lake, horse and carriage rides and a number of other events at the DenarePlex throughout the weekend.

“I’m hoping it gets bigger and we get a few more volunteers,” said Durette.

“We’re starting to lose some volunteers, but it looks like we’ll be close to getting them back again. We hope it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. The more volunteers, the more events and the more we can do.”

Anyone hoping to volunteer during the festival, including residents of Flin Flon and Denare Beach, can call the recreation office at (306) 362-2050.
