The City of Flin Flon has received one of its largest payouts from the federal government’s Gas Tax Fund in years.

On Aug. 10, money from the federal fund was allocated to communities across Canada, including areas in northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan.

Through the Manitoba allocation, the City of Flin Flon received $305,804. However, since a portion of Flin Flon is located in Saskatchewan, the city was also eligible for funding through Saskatchewan’s provincial allocation.

In total, Flin Flon received $14,335 for Flin Flon, Sask., which will be added in to the Manitoba funding, giving the community a total of $320,139.56.

It is the largest amount of money the city has received through the fund since the 2009-10 fiscal year, when around $338,000 was given to the community.

City treasurer Lyn Brown said the funding is typically used for vital infrastructure.

“Normally, what we do is we use it for critical instances. In the past, we’ve used it to augment our roads and bridges work,” she said.

In total, the fund provided $72 million to communities across Manitoba. In Saskatchewan, $61.9 million was allocated.

Some of the projects the funds will be allocated to include road rehabilitation, sidewalk renewal on Main Street, the water treatment plant and water, storm and sewer pipe work.

“Going forward we will continue to earmark these funds for critical areas needing rehabilitation and renewal,” said Brown.
