People and families affected by dementia can hear advice and strategies to fight the disease this week.

After weeks of co-ordination between Flin Flon-based advocates, the Northern Health Region and the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, a date has been set for an information session for people affected by the cognitive illness.

The session will take place at the Flin Flon Personal Care Home at 50 Church Street, starting at 7 pm on Jan. 16. Norma Kirkby, program director for the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, will conduct the session.

Part of the session will teach people impacted by the disease how to recognize and deal with symptoms of dementia, both medically and on a day-to-day basis, while another part will discuss how people can reduce their risk of suffering from dementia later in life.

More than 22,500 people in Manitoba currently live with some form of dementia, according to statistics from the Alzheimer Society.

The numbers show that more than one in every 60 Manitobans currently has some form of dementia.

The Alzheimer Society also expects the number of people either diagnosed or showing symptoms of the disease to reach 40,000 by 2038.
