A follow-up meeting between Creighton town officials and the Saskatchewan provincial health ministry has been scheduled for next month.

Creighton Mayor Bruce Fidler met with Saskatchewan Minister of Rural and Remote Health Greg Ottenbreit in Creighton last month to discuss the temporary closure of obstetrics services in Flin Flon, a measure that could have a disproportionate impact on mothers and families in Saskatchewan communities near Flin Flon. Before the closure of obstetrics operations at Flin Flon General Hospital last November, more than half of the births at the facility involved families from Saskatchewan.

At the town’s Jan. 9 council meeting, Fidler said he had not yet received any update from the minister or ministry regarding any actions taken, but that he plans on meeting with Ottenbreit again during the upcoming Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA) convention in Saskatoon from Feb. 3-5. All members of Creighton town council, including Fidler as well as chief administrative officer Paula Muench and regional economic development coordinator Eve O’Leary, are scheduled to attend the convention.

Fidler said he hoped to receive further information or commitments both at the convention and from the meeting.

“That’s my intent with the meeting, to see if we’ve had any progress,” he said.

“We haven’t had any update yet, but I do have a meeting set up with him while we’re down at SUMA.”
