Updates may be coming for the shop at Ecole McIsaac School.

A report from the Flin Flon School Division (FFSD) workplace safety and health committee mentioned that FFSD shop facilities had been assessed by Machine Safety Assessment. The report and its findings were discussed by FFSD board trustees during the April 9 school board meeting.

“The reports from the assessment indicated updates are needed to the machinery,” reads the report, which goes on to mention a new layout for the McIsaac shop and new safety practices that have been recommended.

FFSD superintendent Constance McLeese said the school will be looking at fixing up the shop facilities, which are also used by students from Ruth Betts Community School and have been used by Hapnot Collegiate students in the past.

“There are two things going on - you need to have shop safety, but you also need to be able to fill it with curriculum,” said McLeese of any potential changes.

“It’s due for an overhaul. It’s old. They’re in the process of finalizing how that should look. It should happen over the summer. It’s the timeline for whatever they need to remove and recover and redo. It should be up and running in September.”

In terms of capital spending, McLeese said the school division’s budget will not likely see a setback because of shop fixes, adding that money has been allocated already for some renovations.

“We are very well resourced with equipment, but there may be some safety things we need to get it up to code. We’ve put money aside in the budget for that,” she said.

Capital plan

Board trustees passed a motion to approve a five-year capital plan for the division.

The plan is part of annual financial consultation with the provincial Department of Education, discussing what spending the division plans on doing and what priorities the division may have for any extra financing.

“It’s the plan we submit every year. We have to do a five-year capital plan for the government, the school finance branch in particular,” said school board trustee Heather Fleming, who added that a plan was approved last year and that spending on roof repairs and grooming rooms at school division facilities was approved through a similar plan.

“The roofs that were all done last year, that’s all part of the five year plan, as are our grooming rooms. We put our wishlist in and the government looks at all the school divisions and our priorities. If we’re lucky, it’s good.”

Travel club

Many Faces Education Centre teacher Dan Dillon and Hapnot Collegiate students Linnea McNichol and Andy Richard talked about their recent Hapnot travel club trip to Europe. The group may have just returned home early this month, but plans are already underway for the next travel club trip - a voyage to Ecuador in 2021.

The delegation reviewed the recent trip with Dillon sharing his thoughts as an organizer and McNichol and Richard telling trustees what they had seen.

Trustees may give official approval to the Ecuador trip at the next board meeting, scheduled for April 23.
