Sask. reports four new COVID-19 cases, La Loche outbreak continues

Four new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Saskatchewan, with each new case reported in La Loche.

The cases are tied to an ongoing outbreak of the disease in the northwestern community, where around 150 cases of the disease have been reported since the disease was first found.

While four new cases of COVID-19 were reported across Saskatchewan, the total number of cases added to northern totals increase by five - one case, previously reported as being in Regina, was reassigned to the north region by provincial health officials. More than 200 total cases of the disease - 206 in total - have been reported in far northern Saskatchewan, with 149 of those cases still considered active.

Eleven more people have been confirmed as recovered from COVID-19.

The provincial government extended the existing state of emergency for another two weeks May 13. Gatherings of 10 people are more are still prohibited and social distancing guidelines are in effect. Travel restrictions to, from and within northern Saskatchewan are also still in effect.

Saskatchewan has reported nearly twice as many cases of COVID-19 as Manitoba has, with dramatic differences in the number of cases reported in the north. Saskatchewan has reported 577 total cases of COVID-19 compared to Manitoba's 290. Saskatchewan has reported 312 cases in northern regions, while Manitoba has reported only three since the beginning of the outbreak.

No cases of the disease have been confirmed in Saskatchewan communities near Flin Flon since the beginning of the outbreak.
