Saskatchewan has reported its eighth death from COVID-19, a person in their 50s from the far north of the province.

The home community of the deceased is unknown, as is their identity. Provincial health officials also said a second death is under investigation by provincial health officials for possibly being caused by COVID-19.

The news of the death overshadowed what may have otherwise been Saskatchewan's best day for COVID-19 in weeks. No new cases of the disease were found in Saskatchewan May 26, the first time since May 18 where no new cases were reported.

Out of 634 total reported cases of COVID-19, 77 cases are still considered active.

Saskatchewan also announced a new set of shared health and safety principles for medical personnel and first responders, formulated by health authorities, unions and the provincial government. The new guidelines will include performing point-of-cae risk assessments before any interactions with patients or members of the public, droplet-plus precautions including gloves, face shields and other personal protective equipment (PPE) when dealing with people who may have COVID-19 and providing full PPE for frontline workers.
