The Flin Flon area’s ParticipAction efforts didn’t lead to any big money prizes, but organizers are still calling their efforts a success.

“[It was] something to kind of kickstart people’s summer, to get outside and stay active with their families and friends,”  City of Flin Flon recreation programmer Caitlin Bailey said.

“It didn’t have to just be about working in a gym or running. Everything from skipping rope to pushing your kid in a stroller to being at the beach swimming. Those are all things that you could count as minutes. I think it was a good reminder for everybody in the community to stay active throughout our summer.”

More than 250 million minutes of activity were logged across Canada for ParticipAction’s community future challenge. Enderby, B.C. was named Canada’s most active community by ParticipAction, with Headingley taking home top spot in Manitoba.

Flin Flon received a grant to cap off their ParticipAction activities with a colour run. Bailey said she was still waiting to hear from ParticipAction to get the final numbers for the area.

“We had 176 participants for our colour run,” she said. “That event was our big celebration to end our collection of minutes and it went really well. We had all the schools come down and take part including Creighton, École McIsaac and Ruth Betts, which was awesome.”

Summer programming

The Flin Flon recreation department relaxes their programming during the summer.

“Usually, we tend to stay away from specific programming just because everyone kind of leaves,” Bailey said.

“It’s a very cabin centered community. We do focus on our Summer in the Parks summer program, which runs all summer, so it’s an eight week program. The Flin Flon petting zoo is one other big one that runs all summer.“

There will also be Pickleball four times a week, and pick-up basketball running Monday nights at Hapnot Collegiate during the summer.
