A popular Facebook page for Flin Flonners has been shut down.

Flin Flon Post It, a public Facebook page geared toward community discussion, was closed for public viewing on July 29 after a series of racially charged posts and comments.

On July 30, the page was inaccessible through Facebook search.

“Due to the obscene amount of racism and hate that has been seen on this group, we will be shutting it down,” read a now deleted statement made on the page by a group administrator. The administrator also requested that users remove themselves from the group.

A post made on July 29 included multiple racist threats toward indigenous people and led to multiple other posts and comments, which included threats of violence, racial slurs and other violations.

As a bulletin board-style page for community members with between 7,000 and 8,000 members at its peak – at times, more than the population of Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach combined – discussions on Post It varied widely, ranging from memes and advertisements for small businesses to occasional inflammatory debates, often involving race or politics.

A new page was created to serve the same purpose as Flin Flon Post It, with a page administrator announcing that sexist, racist, violent or overly rude content would not be tolerated.

The page had around 500 members as of press time.

The Reminder was unable to reach page administrators for comment.
