Cross country skiers will have to wait a few more weeks for a provincial race in Flin Flon.

The Cross Country Saskatchewan provincial races originally set for Feb. 16-17 at the Flin Flon Ski Club were cancelled Feb. 14 after weather forecasts showed the expected temperatures were  too cold to hold the event.

According to Cross Country Saskatchewan guidelines, any race must be cancelled if temperatures dip below minus-20 degrees Celsius. Atom and peewee skiing events should be cancelled if conditions are minus-15 or colder.

Despite the end of a recent cold snap, weather conditions for the course on the planned days of the race were slated to dip below those thresholds. Environment Canada forecasts show temperatures as low as minus-26 degrees on Feb. 16 and a low of minus-34 late on Feb. 17.

Under current rules, race organizers have the right to change conditions before any event, including distances, courses, formats and start times, if weather or trail conditions aren’t considered up to par.

“With people travelling for long distances, waiting here for a possible race wouldn’t have worked,” said Flin Flon Ski Club president Dean Grove.
