The number of positive COVID-19 cases in Saskatchewan has passed 300, but almost two-thirds of all reported cases have ended with the patients recovering.

Two new positive cases of the disease were reported by the Saskatchewan government April 13, bringing the province to 300 total cases. The bad news was offset by the announcement of 14 new recoveries from COVID-19 reported.

As of April 13, 178 of the 300 people diagnosed with COVID-19 in Saskatchewan have recovered from the disease.

One hundred and eighteen cases are still considered active. Four people have died within Saskatchewan due to the disease.

While the number of reported cases has slowed down elsewhere in the province, the number of cases in the far north (including Creighton, Denare Beach and other Saskatchewan communities near Flin Flon) has risen to seven. The exact locations of any of the new cases have not been released by Saskatchewan health officials. Two of the seven people who have tested positive for the disease have recovered. No deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported in the far north region.

Travel remains the leading cause of disease transmission in Saskatchewan, with 131 cases tied to travel. Another 120 cases have been linked to community contact or through mass gatherings. Exposure is not known in 27 cases. The remainder of the cases are under investigation.

Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan government’s Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) is enforcing a ban on sharp rises in prices for goods and services throughout the province. Any business deemed by the FCAA to have gouged customers during COVID-19 could face penalties including fines and prosecution.

“During this unprecedented time, it is simply unacceptable to be price gouging,” said provincial justice minister and Saskatchewan Attorney General Don Morgan in a press release April 13.

“Businesses or individuals in Saskatchewan found price gouging will face stiff penalties and possibly jail time.  It is essential that we look out for each other and this government will protect residents of Saskatchewan from exploitation when they are trying to protect their families.”
