Another case of COVID-19 has been reported in far northern Saskatchewan. No information has been released by the province about which community the positive test came from.

The new northern case brings the number of positive tests in the region containing Creighton, Denare Beach, Deschambault Lake, Pelican Narrows, Sandy Bay and other communities to five. Two people in the region have recovered from the disease.

In total, seven new cases of COVID-19 were reported by the province April 9 across Saskatchewan, bringing numbers up to 278 total cases. Twelve people have been reported to have recovered from the disease, bringing the total of recoveries up to 115 total - about 41 per cent of all cases reported.

Eight people in Saskatchewan are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19, with two people in intensive care. Three Saskatchewan residents have died due to COVID-19.

The Regina-based Roy Romanow Provincial Laboratory has processed a total of 16,672 tests during the outbreak. Tests have been ordered for 289 people in the far north, with five people testing positive. Out of the 16,672 tests performed, almost two-thirds have been conducted on residents of Regina and Saskatoon.

The Saskatchewan government announced April 9 that it would make $1.5 million in emergency financial aid available to university and college students impacted by COVID-19 and considered at-risk. Funding will be distributed according to students' financial circumstances.

“We recognize the need for urgent supports to help vulnerable students, including those from northern, remote and indigenous communities, as well as international students unable to return home,” said Tina Beaudry-Mellor, provincial advanced education minister.  “It is critical that we work with our institutions to help students who have nowhere else to turn.”
