One man is dead and another suffered injuries after a train derailment near Ponton.

Reports of the derailment were called in to Wabowden RCMP shortly before 6 pm on Sept. 15. The train derailed on the Hudson Bay Railway, about 12 kilometres away from the junction of Highway 6 and Highway 39 at the Minago River crossing.

Two crew members on the train, a 38-year-old man and a 59-year-old man, both from The Pas, were trapped on board. The train was transporting gasoline and propane.

Officers reached the scene by air hours later, followed by rescuers and special equipment to reach the trapped crew members. The 38-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 59-year-old was rescued from the train and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

It is the second time this summer that a train has derailed along the line. On July 5, an eight-car Via Rail train left the tracks between Hudson Bay, Sask. and The Pas. Including passengers and crew, 21 people were onboard at the time. Two crew members were injured. Heavy rain was believed to have played a role in the incident.

Transport Canada and RCMP are investigating the incident at Ponton.
