An ill-fated canoe trip on Amisk Lake earlier this week has left one man dead and left five others hospitalized.

According to Saskatchewan RCMP, police were called to the south end of Amisk Lake around 7 p.m. local time June 16. Officers were told that three canoes had capsized and six males were in the water.

An investigation of the incident showed that the group was crossing Amisk Lake when a thunderstorm hit. The storm, which led to thunderstorm warnings being announced for the Flin Flon area by Environment Canada that day,  caused large waves on the lake and made all three canoes capsize.

All six males stayed with their overturned boats and floated on the lake until they were able to reach cell phone range, calling for help by dialing on a cell phone in a waterproof container.

Using coordinates from the phone call, RCMP members from the Flin Flon and Creighton detachments, along with Saskatchewan conservation officers and members of the Denare Beach Volunteer Fire Department, found the group around 8:30 p.m. One male was unconscious when police, firefighters and COs found the group. That man, identified only as a 48-year-old man from Saskatoon, was later pronounced dead. The other five members of the group were taken for medical attention at Flin Flon General Hospital.
