Northlands College recognized some of its best and brightest students during its Achievement Day ceremony last Thursday afternoon. About 50 students, family members and dignitaries gathered at the Creighton Community Hall for a ceremony honouring the institute's top eastern region students. "This was an outstanding year," said regional director Ordean Goulet, who is based in Creighton. Northlands offered a variety of basic and post-secondary education opportunities in a handful of northeastern Saskatchewan communities, including Creighton and Pelican Narrows. Among them were courses in the electrical field, early childhood education, oil field safety preparation, heavy equipment operating and high school equivalency. See 'Local' P.# Con't from P.# While about 80 per cent of Creighton's Northlands students come from outlying communities, Goulet said that's changing in part because of university programming. Still, in the view of Northlands CEO Bill McLaughlin, more work must be done to raise the college's profile. "There's always been the expectation that to get an education... you have to go to Saskatoon or Regina," said McLaughlin, one of Thursday's guests. McLaughlin said the college is tackling that misconception by promoting itself more, particularly among high school students unaware of opportunities in their own backyard.
