Nineteen-year-old man arrested after allegedly taking woman, infant hostage in Flin Flon

Flin Flon RCMP have arrested a 19-year-old man after a brief hostage situation Sunday evening.

RCMP received a report around 5:40 p.m. Feb. 7 of an armed man inside an apartment with a female and an infant inside he was refusing to allow leave. Officers surrounded the building shortly after arrival, with other officers from nearby detachments, including Creighton RCMP, responding to the scene. A hostage negotiator was taken to the scene to make contact with the male, identified as a 19-year-old man.

The man left the apartment and was arrested when he attempted to get back inside, assaulting an officer in the course of the arrest. The officer sustained minor injuries. Officers entered the apartment and found the female and infant inside, physically uninjured.

The man faces several charges in relation to the incident, including use of a firearm in taking a hostage, unlawful confinement, assault on a peace officer and several firearms-related charges. The suspect has been remanded into RCMP custody.

The 19-year-old man's identity has not been released by RCMP.

Information relating to the incident has been received from Manitoba RCMP. None of the allegations have been proven in court.
