‘Newfie Sisters’ share hometown pride while attending game show

They weren’t invited to “come on down,” but four local sisters still cherished their chance to attend a taping of The Price is Right – and show off their hometown pride.

And viewers will be able to catch glimpses of Alvera Koop, Virginia Kerfont, Corine Kerfont and Rella Dubie when the famous game show airs on Monday, Nov. 28.

“We will be seen on TV,” notes Koop with a laugh.

“It was a good feeling, a happy feeling, to be there. Everybody is just so happy to try and get on The Price is Right.”

The sisters attended a recent Price is Right taping while visiting Los Angeles, where they met up with two friends.

After a five-hour-long process to register, sign papers and undergo pre-taping interviews, they entered what is considered one of the liveliest studios on television. Contestants raced to the front stage before host Drew Carey made his entrance.

“Totally different,” said Koop when asked how the set looks in person compared to on TV. “The stage is small. It looks huge on TV. It’s not. There’s a lot going on on that stage. There’s cameramen all over and there’s people telling you to applaud.”

Originally from Newfoundland and Labrador, the four sisters have lived in Flin Flon for decades. With specially made t-shirts, they showed off their provincial and civic pride while at the taping.

The siblings wore matching pink t-shirts emblazoned with “Newfie Sisters” on the front and “We Came On Down From Flin Flon, Manitoba” on the back. Viewers may see the front of the shirts, but not the back.

“We wanted to let people know exactly where we were from, originally and now,” said Koop.

Koop said the shirts garnered plenty of attention from their fellow audience members.

“They wanted to know where we were from, because a lot of people probably don’t even know what ‘Newfie’ means, so we said we were originally from Newfoundland but we now live in Flin Flon, Manitoba, Canada,” she said, adding that people thought it was “pretty cool” that four sisters made the trip together.

Koop has been watching The Price is Right for many years, but she said her sister Virginia was the driving force behind getting the siblings to the taping.

Koop admits she did not want to be invited to “come on down” to play one of the price-guessing games on the show, though Virginia would have relished the opportunity.

Having never been on TV before, Koop knows viewers will see the sisters because a monitor visible to the audience displayed the episode as it unfolded.

The sisters had also hoped to attend a taping of The Ellen DeGeneres Show while in LA, but Koop said it was difficult to get tickets.

Koop works as volunteer coordinator for the Northern Health Region. Virginia Kerfont is a health-care aide at the hospital, while Corine Kerfont works for the health region’s northern patient travel program. Rella Dubie works behind the desk at the Flin Flon Aqua Centre.
