I have a real mishmash of entries to report on for this weekÕs column. So many items presented themselves over the past number of weeks, that I figured I would try to briefly touch upon them all. Firstly, I was invited to the LegionÕs regular monthly meeting on Saturday, June 21. While there, I witnessed Branch President Iona Johnston present Legion Life Memberships to Lois Charron (20 years service), Dawn Roberts (30 years service), and Gerry Charron (35 years service). After a very orderly and efficiently run meeting, those in attendance enjoyed a scrumptious brunch and some of JedÕs (Gerry) Birthday Cake. Directly following the meeting, Johnston also presented Dori Forsyth, from the Friends of the Fireman, with a cheque for $1,112 for the new fire truck. The cheque represented money the Legion raised at their Car Show Meat Draw several weeks ago. Moving on, another very successful Rick Hansen Wheels in Motion event was held in Snow Lake on Sunday, June 8. This event was initiated in 2003 and raises funds that go towards spinal cord research and improving the quality of life for people living with spinal cord injuries and related disabilities. Local advocate Roger Wiesner has ensured that Snow Lake has participated in the annual meet since its inception. Shortly after 2 p.m., everyone set off form the Lawrie Marsh Hall, taking in the course, then returning to the hall. There were prizes awarded for most pledges collected, and Rick Hansen t-shirts and pins were presented as well. The tireless volunteers from the Snow Lake Health Auxiliary helped out with the event; donating food, drinks, and ice cream for all to enjoy after the walk. Once back at the hall, everyone was entertained with the musical flair of Tony Butt, Claude Trudeau, Denis and David Yates. The eventÕs participants raised $3,800.00 for the Rick Hansen Wheel in Motion Foundation. In another local event, a healthy number of participants braved cool weather and a sprinkling of rain on the afternoon of June 14 in order to take in the Third Annual Manitoba Mtis Fishing Derby. The tourney takes place on Snow Lake and out of the 45 people entered in the hidden length event, there were 33 fish caught and released. Of these, 1st and $800 went to Doug Pettigrew, 2nd place and $400 was picked up by Ron Barrows, young Jordan Sass reeled in 3rd place and a cool $200, while Cathy Stabback picked up $100 with her 4th place catch. Additionally, Sandy Morrison was the winner of $73 in the 50/50 draw and donated prizewinners included: Kel Cockerill, Sydney Coulson, Fred Pronger, Lynda Pronger, Ron Barrow, Jack Forsyth, Ted Stabback, Jordan Sass, Bob Doak, Crystal Trudeau, Hayden Trudeau, Jennifer Morrison, Dawn Roberts, Tina Libby, and Robin Coulson. Anyone walking by Snow LakeÕs Sunset Bay Beach over the last week or so, would have noticed a flurry of activity. The folks from the Community Boardwalk Committee have been hard at it, and now have all the boards for the first phase of the beach boardwalk in place and it appears ready for use. This worthy project will make it much easier for those with limited mobility and people pushing strollers to access and enjoy a day at the beach! Finally, last but not least, the class of 2008 took their graduation walk on the afternoon of Saturday, June 21. A packed gymnasium was on hand to witness the event, and the presentation of the bursaries and scholarships. The recipients of these were four of the seven graduates: Dana Kowalchuk received the School District College scholarship; Brittany Ventura received the Student Council, Arts Council, and Steelworkers Bursaries; Christina Walker was awarded the LionÕs Memorial, Legion Auxiliary, Student Council, Royal Purple, ElksÕ, and Arts Council bursaries; and Jenna Wiwcharuk-Roy garnered the Legion, NurseÕs Union and Northern Neighbours bursaries, as well as the School District University and HBMS scholarships. In addition to these awards, Ventura and Wiwcharuk-Roy were awarded Academic Certificates of Merit, and Christina Walker was awarded a Certificate of Excellence. Walker was also awarded the Governor GeneralÕs medal, while Wiwcharuk-Roy received the Most Improved Award. The Class of 2008 was made up of: Jenna Wiwcharuk-Roy, Dana Kowalchuk, Jace Ryan, Sheila Holmgren, Christina Walker, Brittany Ventura, and Danny Otto. My Take on Snow Lake runs Fridays.
