Men walk a mile in red heels to raise awareness about violence against women

Some men wobbled and some men seemed quite comfortable in their red high heels during the Walk a Mile in Her Shoes event Friday, July 3. The event is held every year to raise awareness to end violence against women.

Joking about how their legs looked and questioning how women actually wear high heels, nearly 20 men prepared to march down Main Street.

Colleen Arnold of the Women’s Resource Centre told the large crowd that gathered to watch that while men in high heels do provide a good laugh, the real reason they were gathered wasn’t funny at all.

A sense of seriousness overcame the crowd as Arnold explained the countless women and children who are victims of violence simply because of their gender.

After Arnold’s address, the men marched from Pioneer Square down Main Street and onto Hapnot Street, carrying placards with messages like “Rape hurts us all” and “Put yourself in her shoes.”

The men walking ranged from teenagers to men in their senior years, but one bystander started showing his support early on.

Lucas Rainville, not quite four years old, sat on the back of a stroller with his mom’s red high heels on his feet.

Lucas may be too young to understand the impact his much too-big shoes have made, but those in the crowd who took notice were impressed.
