A byelection for a vacancy on Snow Lake town council has ended with a new face elected to the seat.

Kyle McLaughlin, a 35-year-old Hudbay employee at the Lalor paste plant, won election April 16 after coming out on top of a two-person race for former councillor Andrew Smith’s empty spot. McLaughlin earned 188 votes in the byelection, besting former Snow Lake mayor Kim Stephen’s 84 votes.

The election saw about 33 per cent of eligible voters attend polls.

McLaughlin will join incumbent councillors Shelley Chrapun, Tom Fleming, Sherri Hill, Bill Pleasance and Penny Roberts and Mayor Peter Roberts on the council, which represents the town of 899 people about 200 kilometres away from Flin Flon.

It is the first time McLaughlin has held elected office. A longtime resident of Snow Lake, the new councillor is a direct descendant of two of the town’s original residents, Ernie and Millie McLaughlin.
