Manitoba RCMP confirm a vehicle found destroyed near Gillam was used by a pair of suspects wanted in connection with three murders in British Columbia.

A vehicle fire was reported near Gillam and Fox Lake Cree Nation late July 22. After arriving at the scene, police confirmed the vehicle was the same one the two suspects, 19-year-old Kam McLeod and 18-year-old Bryer Schmegelsky, had been travelling in.

It is unclear if the suspects are still in northern Manitoba, if they have found another vehicle or if they had fled into the bush.

Manitoba RCMP have increased police presence in and around Gillam. They have set up a check-stop at the intersection of Provincial Roads 280 and 290 leading into the town.

Only one provincial highway, Provincial Road 280, connects Gillam to the rest of Manitoba. The community is located on the south shore of Stephens Lake, part of the Nelson River system.

"With respect to public safety, we understand the concerns being raised. This is a complex, on-going investigation, involving multiple jurisdictions. We are engaged with police across Canada," reads a news release from Manitoba RCMP.

"We are investigating all tips and are continuing to ask for the public’s assistance."

Members of the public are asked to not approach the two if spotted and to call 911 or local RCMP services.

The suspects had been previously spotted in northern Saskatchewan.
