Tune up those air guitars and get ready to grab the mic. Northern Growing Abilities (NGA) will be hosting a fundraising lip-sync battle Feb. 22 at the Creighton Community Club.

“We are so ready,” NGA chairperson Amber Beaton said.

“This is going to be really fun. We had a great time with it last year – I hope it's gonna be just as good.”

The lip-sync battles will see teams perform mouthing alongside music, dressed up in costumes and dancing. The winner is whichever team gets the most applause.

Beaton said a team from Northern Rainbow’s End set the standard last year.

“They had just the absolute best show - It was wonderful,” she said.

“They really put their whole hearts into it… They did the song “Single Ladies”, but they were all dressed up as old women with wigs.”

Winning teams will come away with bragging rights and trophies, while attendees can enter an elimination draw for a weekend stay at any Victoria Inn in Manitoba.

Beaton said the second edition of the lip-sync battle should run smoother than last year. Last year, Beaton wasn’t able to catch the show she helped organize.

“I wouldn’t say we were disorganized, but now we know exactly where each person needs to be at what time,” she said.

“We got advice from other groups that do socials and eliminator draws. We learned a little bit and we were able to streamline the whole process, so this year should go even smoother. I might be able to catch my show.”

Last year, NGA sold 200 tickets to the show. This year, they’re upping the maximum capacity to 250.

The group has been on a fundraising tear in 2020 so far. The group just finished a cash calendar, with draws every day in January livestreamed on their Facebook page.

“We did very well on it,” Beaton said.

The group hopes to do an additional lip-sync battle for kids. Because alcohol is served at the Feb. 22 event, only those older than 19 can attend.

“We wanted to do [a kids lip-sync battle] last year but everything got a little bit too busy,” Beaton said.

“Hopefully this year, we'll be able to put one on for the kids. Make it Disney themed or something.”

Beaton is six months into her tenure as chairperson for NGA. The group’s main goal currently is to continue planning for their hydroponic greenhouse and disability programming project.

“Things are progressing,” she said.

“I feel like things are progressing faster than they have been before. I’m very hopeful, very positive. It's going very well right now. I'm really enthusiastic about what we're doing.”

Tickets for the NGA’s lip-sync battle are available at Northern Rainbow’s End, Gateway Tempo and Di's Confectionery.
