A new mineral discovery near Snow Lake has Hudbay buzzing.

Hudbay announced a discovery Feb. 26 of a deposit with high-grade zinc and high-grade gold intersections between the company’s current Lalor mine and the former Chisel North facility southwest of Snow Lake.

The project is a convenient one for Hudbay, which owns 100 per cent of the property.

Drill hole intersections that revealed the deposit are less than a kilometre away from the existing ramp between Lalor and Chisel North and according to a release from Hudbay, are “within trucking distance” of surface and are less than 15 kilometres away from the Stall concentrator.

Drilling at the site has revealed some zones of high-grade zinc mineralization as well as a rich footwall gold zone, showing results for zinc, copper, gold and silver in six drill holes

Two drills are continuing to operate in the area.

“These zinc-rich and gold-rich intersections highlight the ever prospective nature of the Flin Flon greenstone belt and demonstrate the value of our Manitoba assets,” said Alan Hair, Hudbay president and CEO in a news release.

“The discovery of these new zones within close proximity to our existing infrastructure and at shallow depth aligns very well with our Manitoba strategy and is another example of leveraging our exploration expertise to realize additional value.

The Chisel North mine site was previously operated by Hudbay from 2000 to 2012.
