It will be a busy month for the Women’s Resource Centre and Safe Haven – the organization will be holding events all throughout November to observe Domestic Violence Prevention Month.

The group will conduct a series of presentations with RCMP at schools in Cranberry Portage, Creighton and Flin Flon for elementary and high school students, raising awareness of domestic violence and abuse.

Executive director Colleen Arnold said the issue of abuse is of concern in both Manitoba and Saskatchewan – both provinces record more incidents of domestic violence per person than other Canadian provinces.

“It’s still a huge problem, everywhere. Manitoba is fairly high, compared to across Canada, for domestic violence. Saskatchewan is the highest and Manitoba is right behind in second,” she said.

The main event for the month is the Take Back the Night Walk, which will be held on Sunday, Nov. 25, starting at 5:15 pm.

People will gather at Pioneer Square and take their message down Main Street.

Arnold said the Women’s Resource Centre and Safe Haven will continue to offer their programming, with little change expected in the future.

“The awareness is in the hope of prevention. For prevention, you need awareness,” she said.
