After being limited to 35 games last season due to injuries, former Flin Flon Bomber Michael Young is enjoying a strong campaign in the ECHL.

Young competed in the league’s all-star game this season, playing for the Rapid City Rush.

“He’s playing some exceptional hockey right now, recognized by his well-deserved all-star team selection,” said Mark Binetti, director of media relations for the Rush.

Young has played parts of three seasons for the Rush in the ECHL, which is considered two steps below the NHL. The Rapid City, South Dakota-based team is affiliated with the NHL’s Arizona Coyotes.

“The thing I enjoy most about playing for the Rush has to be the fans and the atmosphere in our arena,” said Young, 28. “We have a solid fan base of knowledgeable hockey fans.”

The fans and the organization have quickly come to appreciate Young on and off the ice.

“He has to be one of the most genuine individuals I have ever seen don a Rapid City Rush uniform,” Binetti said. “His knowledge of the game for how young he is, his compete level, work ethic and leadership are characteristics you hope every hockey player embodies.”

Young came to Flin Flon in 2007 and played through the 2009-10 season.

“The thing I remember most about Flin Flon is definitely the Whitney Forum,” he said. “Between the loud and crazy fans to the historic rink, I don’t believe there is a better junior rink or atmosphere in Canada.”

After his time with the Bombers, Young was a student-athlete for four years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

He continues to desire to play hockey a high level.

“My love for the game is what keeps me wanting to play hockey,” Young said. “Not many people can say that they play their favourite sport for a living, and I’m blessed to be able to continue doing so.”
